Kara’s Epistle

Kara’s Epistle

I am currently sitting in my office wondering what to write about. I realize it is way past due that I update this section of our ever popular web page, but I am at a loss for words. Imagine that. It doesn't happen often.

I suppose a good thing to talk about would be our recent retreat. I felt the Spirit moving among the teens who attended. On Saturday night we had Reconciliation and Adoration and many of the teens shared that this was one of their favorite parts of the retreat. I got to thinking. I see many of us in the Youth Ministry field trying to compete with all of the things that our teens are up against today. There is a media frenzy going on in the lives of our teens and often times we feel that we need to compete with that and give the teens a big production on Sunday nights or they won't be interested. Yet, the high light of the weekend was one of the simplest things we have ever done. We simply brought Jesus out and adored Him. There was no big production. In fact for a good deal of the time we were silent or singing in a-ca-pela. Teens do need to be shown the word of God in creative ways, but they also want silence in their lives. They are happy to sit back and take a break from all of the chaos of their lives. It was quite a revelation.

Something else we did was remove all of their electronics (CD players, head phones, cell phone, pagers, etc.) for the weekend. Needless to say there were a great deal of complaints Friday night over this. However, by Sunday a few of the teens said they were glad we did this because it gave them a chance to be with God in silence before bedtime. They said it was nice to have a lot of unnecessary distractions removed from their lives for a little while.

Anyway, I guess I had some things to say after all. Know that you are all in my prayers and I will talk to you soon. Peace in Christ.
